Russ was elected as President of the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, a field supervisor for the Red Wing Athletic Field, a developer of the baseball complex in Red Wing. Russ served at the first President of the Hall of Fame and for fourteen years provided the leadership that guided the development of the Hall of Fame and the Hall of Fame Museum. As head groundskeeper for sixteen years, he supervised the Red Wing Athletic Field and was given the High School Coaches Grounds Keeper of the year award in 2000. Russ was the co-chair of the 1985 and 1991 State Amateur Baseball Tournaments in Red Wing. Also, he helped to raise funds to develop the baseball complex in Red Wing, and has served on the board of the Red Wing Baseball Association. Russ was very active in the community as a member of the YMCA board of directors, Minnesota Better Business Bureau board of directors, and the Red Wing Ice Arena board of directors.
