Schmitz is credited with helping jump-start the amateur baseball program in St. Peter after a successful playing career in Springfield, LeSueur and St. Peter. Friends say that Schmitz was the moving force in re-establishing St. Peter's town team, where he was a player, manager and active volunteer. He also managed and coached St. Peter's American Legion baseball team, as well as a coach in St. Peter's Babe Ruth program. Besides that, he served on St. Peter's city council and was active in his church and parish council. He was a past commander of the St. Peter American Legion and is responsible for St. Peter's Avenue of Flags.
