Amateur baseball exists in Winona today because of the dedication, commitment, and the efforts of Al Smith. In 1977 Al Smith revived the amateur baseball program in Winona and today the Winona Chiefs baseball program is a success. Al Smith has raised money, created playing schedules, organized equipment, repaired uniforms, developed rosters, provided transportation, scheduled umpires, planned promotions, groomed the field, and all of the many other things necessary to run a quality baseball program. To his ball players he has always been a friend.
