Obituary Norman "Red" R. Jones DIED November 28, 2015

was born on September 19, 1938, in Muskegon Heights, Michigan. He was the son of Frieda (Schueler) Jones. Red was baptized and was later confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Raymond, Minnesota. He graduated from Raymond High School in 1957.

Red entered active military service in the United States Navy on February 28, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Red served 50 months due to a two month extension because of the Lebanon Crisis. He received an Honorable Discharge on April 18, 1962, at US Naval Station in San Diego, California, and he achieved the rank of Radioman Third Class.

On November 11, 1967, Red was united in marriage to Judy Syverson at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock, Minnesota. They lived in Grove City for 1 year and then moved to Litchfield, Minnesota. They were married for 48 years and had three sons, Dalen, Brian and Camron.

Red was employed at Berquist Advertising in Willmar for a few years before starting Viking Signs in Litchfield, with Jim Gunter in May of 1966. He later bought out Jim's share and the family business later expanded to Hutchinson and is now managed by his sons, Dalen and Brian.

Red was a member of First Lutheran Church in Litchfield where he served as Octobers head usher. He was a member of the Litchfield VFW Post #2818, the Litchfield American Legion Post #104 and charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3424. Red enjoyed playing pool, softball, darts, paddle tennis and golf, but his real passion was baseball.

Red earned varsity letters at Raymond High in football, basketball and baseball. He played varsity baseball from 9th grade thru 12th grade and was voted M.V.P. his junior and senior years. Red played baseball in the Navy and planned his leave time for summer so he could return home to play baseball with the Raymond Rockets. He played with the Raymond Rockets for 16 years and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2014. Red started Blues Baseball in Litchfield in 1977. Carl Helzen and Red were co-managers for the first 2 years and later held many positions in the organization. He then started the Litchfield Babe Ruth Baseball organization in 1981, and served as president of the league for many years. Red then went on to start Cal Ripken Baseball. He wanted a junior baseball field for the young kids and went to the Eagles Club with his ideas. They voted to finance a field and later added a second field.

Red was inducted in the Blues Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003, the Minnesota Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013 and the West Central Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. He was also Honorary Commodore of the Minneapolis Aquatennial Association in 2006, in recognition of dedicated volunteer service and community involvement.
